TIL the Hobbiton movie set used for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit was originally built to last temporarily for filming, but the landowner saw money in offering guided tours of the Shire to the public and so requested that the structures were made permanent. It’s now a busy tourist attraction.

TIL physicist Bernard Waldman witnessed the bombing of Hiroshima, as a camera operator on the observation aircraft. He was equipped with a special high-speed movie camera with six seconds of film to record the blast. Unfortunately, Waldman forgot to open the camera shutter, and no film was exposed.

TIL of Mrs. Miller, a middle-aged housewife with no formal music training, whose first album “Mrs. Miller’s Greatest Hits” consisted of badly sung covers of popular pop songs from bands such as The Beatles. Her album reached #15 on the Billboard’s Top Albums chart in 1966.

TIL that the 5th oldest tree in the world was destroyed when a 26 year old model set a fire to see better while she was smoking meth inside the hollow trunk. She was turned in by friends after showing them pictures of the fire and telling them “I can’t believe I burned down a tree older than Jesus.”
